Sleep, Mattresses, and Back Pain: What Actually Matters

There is no one perfect mattress. There is a perfect mattress for you - and it's probably not the one in the ad.

Patients ask us about mattresses constantly. The honest answer: mattresses matter, but not as much as the marketing claims. Sleep position, pillow setup, hydration, and stress are usually larger factors. A great mattress paired with a stomach-sleeping habit is still a recipe for neck pain.

What actually moves the needle

  • Sleep on your side or back, not your stomach.
  • Pillow that keeps your neck in line with your spine - neither propped up nor sagging.
  • Pillow between (side) or under (back) your knees.
  • Mattress firm enough to support, soft enough to contour. Most adults do best on medium-firm.
  • Replace mattresses every 7–10 years - older ones develop body impressions you don't see.
